Hi,
Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, has no relation with Kuber as such. She rose at the time of 'Samudra Manthan', i.e. 'समुद्र मंथन', on Trayodashi of Kartik month (Vikrami Calendar). As both of them are mainly related to wealth, the following mantra has become famous among those who desire to attain wealth by worshiping these two deities.
Eight Divine Forms of Asht-Lakshmi (names given in the image) |
Lord Kuber, a painting. |
Lord Kuber is known as the wealth manager for all the Gods and of the universe. The meaning of the term 'Kuber' is 'deformed', ill-shaped, or plump bodied. It is said the lord was obese and hence the name. He once ruled Lanka, which was usurped by his half-brother Ravana from him, but returned after Ravana was defeated by Shri Rama Chandra. After a severe penance Lord Shiva blessed him and made him the manager of all the wealth in the universe.
ऊँ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं श्रीं कुबेराय अष्ट-लक्ष्मी
मम गृहे धनं पुरय पुरय नमः ।।
Let's learn the meaning of each of these Sanskrit words one by one.
ऊँ - The supreme Brahma - the creator
ह्रीं - Beeja Mantra of the goddess Bhuvneshwari
श्रीं - Beeja Mantra of Maha-Lakshmi
क्रीं - Beeja Mantra of Kali
कुबेराय - to Lord Kubera
अष्ट-लक्ष्मी - goddess Mahalakshmi, who has eight divine forms
मम - at My
गृहे - Home
धनं - Wealth
पुरय पुरय - Abundance
नमः - Namaste, or salutation
Hence, the mantra evokes a prayer to the Makahlakshmi and Kubera for the abundance of wealth at the prayee's home.
