Hi,
There are eight vargas, namely - Singh, Mriga, Sarp, Mooshak, Vidaal/Marjar, Garuda, and Mesh. Depending upon the position of the Moon at the time of the birth, each individual is born in a particular Varga.
The zodiac circle is divided into 12 equal parts, 30 degrees in each of the 12 zodiac sign. However, there are 27 Nakshatras, each occupying 13d20m of the 360d. Other than Rashi/zodiac and Nakshtra, the zodiac circle can also be divided into 108 Charans.
Each Nakshtra has four Charan, hence with 27 Nakshtra we have 27*4 = 108 Charanas.
Varga can be easily found out using the Charan in which one is born. Each Charan has 13d20m / 4 = 3d20m (teen Ansh bees kala.) so that 108*3d20m = 360 ansha (degrees)
Find out Charan Number out of total 108
Suppose, at the birth time, Moon was in Cancer at 10 d 10m. Total longitude of Moon (Bhugansh) = 2*30d + 10d0m = 60d + 10d10m = 70d0m
Charan No = 70d10m // 3d20m +1= (70*60 + 10)//(3*60 + 20) +1 = 4210//200 + 1= 22 (ignore the remainder)
Hence, Moon has traversed through 21 Charans and has just entered into 22st Charan.
Know Varga from the Charan Number:
Once we have the total Charan No, find out where it lies in the following list. Let's take the charan number = 22, and look it in the following lists.
Note that 22 lies in the 'Vidaal' varga in between 19 and 23. Hence our Varga will be Vidaal.
For those, who understand the Hindi better, please refer to the following Chart directly.
Varga as per the Rashi(Chandra), Ansh and Kala of Moon:
Suppose, the Moon is in Taurus at 10 degrees 20 minutes. Chandra = 1, Ansh = 10, Kala = 20.
Refer the table shown below. Varga = Garuda.
